Thoughts on Minimalism

So I have a confession to make, I am a consumer. I know that is no big shock as we all are nowadays, but I am the worst (or best) kind of consumer, the impulse buyer. Over the years, this has taken a toll on my finances as well as my house because I have too much stuff. I live a lone and cannot believe that one person needs all the items I have accumulated; therefore, in the interest of personal development, I am getting rid of a lot of my “STUFF”. I had often heard the term that your stuff ends up owning you at some point and I think I have reached that critical mass.

The term minimalism has been a buzzword in recent years and I was not entirely sure what the movement was about until I recently wateched a TED talk from a couple of minimalists. During the talk, the two gentlemen went through the chronology of how they became minimalists and how they ended up being able to carry everything they owned in a backpack. They were definitely agile and mobile, but the thing that really struck me about them was how happy they seemed. They possessed genuine smiles and calm demeanors and this a lone seemed worth the effort. To reach that level of contentment is something I think we all strive for. By the way here is the video:

So after watching this video and a couple others on youtube, I have decided to start the process of weeding through my things and getting rid of items that I no longer use or have use for. I also am not going to buy anything new unless I am absolutely going to use it or I get rid of something else first. I am not sure that I can par all my belongings down to the level of these two gentlemen (my hiking gear alone negates that fact), but I am pretty sure that I can simplify my life by not being so tied to so many things. With regards to clothing, I am going to get rid of a lot of clothing that I have been keeping for no good reason and only focus on quality purchases in the future instead of just buying something at a cheap store.

So what about you? Do you sometimes feel like you have too much stuff? Have you taken steps to make your life simpler by decreasing the amount of things you physically own? If so, leave a comment and let me know how you did it.
