This past weekend I was invited to an Ohio Backpacking YouTube Meetup. There were about 8 or 9 channels represented and some other folks joining us who did not have channels. We camped at site 3 at Mohican State Park near Loudonville Ohio. I have to say camping with these guys was a lot of fun. We did a day hike, a small skit to razz one of our fellow YouTubers, and had lots of gear talk around a campfire. It was so nice meeting up with channels I have watched and to really get to know the person behind the camera.
Had a combo Truck camping, backpacking, and hammock camping adventure this past weekend in the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. On Friday evening, we truck and tent camped on Rock Bridge Road and then on Saturday met up with a group to take the Wildcat Trail to the Swift Camp Creek trail for some excellent sites right next to the creek. The rain was in the forecast at 80% at one point but we were lucky that only a few scattered storms passed over us. After a great night sleep in my new Raven Hammock by Dream Hammock, we hiked back up to the cars and had some much-deserved pizza and Ale8 at Miguel’s. Which is something you should never skip if you ever go to Red River Gorge.
This past black Friday, I decided to get out of town and let the consumerism zombies have at each other. My destination was the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. It is one of my favorite places to camp, backpack, and hike. I set out to find Hanson’s Point which is an overlook off an unofficial trail.
I normally use a Saywer Squeeze system to filter my water when I am out hiking and backpacking. If you have ever used one, you know that filling the bag that comes with it is next to impossible. I know most folks use a cut off bottle to do it. But then when you do finally get it filled you have to awkwardly fill your clean bottle in the weirdest of positions. I wanted something easy to fill that I could just let gravity do the work so that is why I did some research on YouTube and found a system I liked. In this video, I show you how to make one for yourself using a filter and bag you can get on Amazon. The filter is called a hyrdoblu and I tested it fully this weekend and it works great. The flow rate is acceptable and filling up the bag is very easy no matter what kind of water source you are using. The best part of it is that the filter is relatively cheap on amazon. You can find it here: http://amzn.to/2yKt33y You could also use a dry bag of whatever size you like, for instance in the video I am using a 2L dry bag, but you could use a larger one for group camping. Here is an example of one that comes in many sizes: http://amzn.to/2xX9PZm
My friend Jen and I took a day trip to nearby Ohio to check out a waterfall I read about in Backpacker Magazine. The picture of it in the magazine was just beautiful so I had to go check it out in person. I hope you enjoy the video.
