Truck Camping: Modifying the Bed Frame

Still making changes to my Toyota Tundra Truck Camping System. On my last trip, I had a little difficulty with the bed being too high so I called up my friend Scott to help me shorten the legs on the frame. After we finished, It was much more manageable getting in and out of the bed and I had a lot more headroom. Modifying the bed frame in this way has really improved the comfort level. We basically just cut three inches of each of the support legs and re-used the plastic caps on the ends. This was a simple modification but made a world of difference. My next step will be to buy properly sized tubs to fit under the bed for storage. I will also be making some more modifications to the top of the truck cap as I will be installing a roof rack and basket, and finally an ARB 8X8 awning All of these preparations are for a road trip out west this summer in which I will be camping each night and not spending any money on a hotel. I plan on visiting Colorado and Utah and seeing some amazing sites along the way

Backpacking and Hammock Camping in the Red River Gorge, Kentucky

Had a combo Truck camping, backpacking, and hammock camping adventure this past weekend in the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. On Friday evening, we truck and tent camped on Rock Bridge Road and then on Saturday met up with a group to take the Wildcat Trail to the Swift Camp Creek trail for some excellent sites right next to the creek. The rain was in the forecast at 80% at one point but we were lucky that only a few scattered storms passed over us. After a great night sleep in my new Raven Hammock by Dream Hammock, we hiked back up to the cars and had some much-deserved pizza and Ale8 at Miguel’s. Which is something you should never skip if you ever go to Red River Gorge.

Truck Camping: Truck Camper Bed Buildout

n this video, I show the process of modifying a twin bed frame I purchased on Amazon to be able to fit my truck bed. I had to do this because I didn’t measure my truck bed first. Live and learn. Anyway if you want to avoid this make sure you always measure first. We got it modified and it works great. We still would have had to do a little welding even if I had done things right because we had to move one of the center supports to accommodate the wheel well. Here is the link to the bed frame if you are interested although I would recommend getting a regular twin instead of a twin XL as it will fit better. Amazon link: http://amzn.to/2nNomyU

Truck Camping: Garden of the Gods Illinois

This past weekend I was dying to give my truck camp setup another shot so I drove four hours from Indianapolis to Herod Illinois to the Garden of the Gods Wilderness. I stayed in the Pharoh campground and I was the only one there!! It was pretty awesome. The cost is only $10 a night and it is first come, first served. There are only 12 camping spots but each one of them has a decent view. There are vault toilets that are open during this time of the year. And there are a ton of trails in the area. I really enjoyed my set up and hope to get out again after some adjustments. Next time I visit the area, I plan to do some of the trails in Shawnee National Forest.

Truck Camping: First Overnighter in my Toyota Tundra

I am embarking on a new kind of camping for me: Truck Camping. In this video, I am basically doing a shakedown camp to test out the theories of staying warm, preparing food, and just getting used to the idea of camping in my truck. This is a short video and more will be coming in the future:
